Stylish or Visual Vomit? Thoughts?

last modified: 11 years ago

For many yrs now I have had a love/ hate relationship w/ my king sized wrought iron bed in our small MBR. I've been to GW multiple times over the yrs. about what I could do to live w/ it in our small bedroom.

You've given me advice on slipcovering it, ditching the footboard part (i.e.: my "Nah, this won't work clothes holder" if you ask DH) and most recently repainting a full sized curbside find chippendale bed high gloss white & outfitting it w/ a queen mattress.

I had this whole eclectic, urban, 'antiquey', modern, feminine, spin thing envisioned & over the yrs slowly started acquiring pieces and pulling it together. It would hinge around either my current black wrought iron bed or the 4 poster chippendale curb find painted in a high gloss white.

Well - I found a bed on CL the other week. It is not white. It is not black. It is not feminine nor chic. It is however lovely and simply another style that I full appreciate and like very, much. It is a queen maple pencil post bed and a totally different design direction.

So this afternoon I put together a moodboard to see if I could tweak what I already planned to work w/ the new bed. I will get a new mattress for it in a few weeks or month or so.

What do you think? Does this look alright? There's lots of different woods, and different styles of furniture. Empire, Shaker, Modern/ industrial laminate......a real mishmash but I think that it works...... When you have this many different styles going on in 1 room it's a fine line between stylish and crap. I have nearly all of the elements that are pictured - I have just never pulled it all together until I had a bed.

I couldn't figure out how to get the pictures to post as a 'whole' so you'll have to click on the green link below.

Thanks for your thoughts! There are comments on each picture about exactly what it is that I have or have something similar to.

Since you seem to be really asking, I think it all goes together except the bed. I'm not clever enough to edit the elements so that the bed goes but perhaps someone here can. Beverly??

I love the bed!! I agree with robo- it does remind me of the Scandinavian farmhouse style.

I am having trouble trying to reconcile all the mahogany with the light maple. Love all the elements separately. Would you consider changing the color of the pencil bed (paint or stain)? Then again, it doesn't seem to have the same history as your other pieces. You can throw in an industrial laminate if the wood tones are similar. Too many clowns, so sorry.

The bed is lovely, I am just having a hard time picturing it with the flame mahogany chest (which coincidentally is a piece I am looking for to put next to my bed, without the glove drawers on top). I think the flame mahogany plus the burled bedside stands call for something different than the wood on that bed. On the notion of whether or not a large bed would be too dominating in a room, I think a large bed in a small bedroom can be a wonderful focal point, as long as there is not too much going on in the room, but that can be a personal choice (my room is only 14 x 14 and has a huge mansion type headboard and it works well).

I have a king-sized pencil post bed, and love it. Mine is pecan, a bit darker than yours. I ordered it from the Spiegel catalog 23 yrs ago. My other pieces with it are Mexican pine, lighter than the bed (which I think helps anchor it). Mine is in a smallish master bedroom, and doesn't overpower it at all.

The light color of your bed throws me off a bit, too, especially a primitive style mixed with much heavier, traditional furniture. But I do think it would work stained a darker color. Is that something you'd consider? I see the direction you're going, and like it ..... rooms that are, or feel as though, they've been collected over time.

That chest is stunning! Wow. Drooling here. :)

Example of a darker bed (not my room):

Also, a different finial style might be worth considering (I'm thinking of changing mine, my bed has the type shown on the far right. I like the spiral):

It's a beautiful bed, but I think it's too Scandinavian simple-sleek for what you've got going on, which is more traditional rustic. I think the color also isn't right. Sorry :-(

Odd man out here, but that's not surprising. That bed has a simplicity that IMO will work with your other elements. The fly in the ointment to my eye is that white cabinet on industrial casters - I'd nix that one.

You have beautiful taste, but it's not working for me. I also think that visually a queen post bed will take up almost as much visual space as a large lower king. We went from a tall iron queen to a lower upholstered king and while the bed is obviously bigger, the impact is not as huge as I thought

Have the two of you slept in a queen much lately? Are you sure you want to give up that extra space just for looks? We're sleeping better than ever even though our room looks a little crowded.

I think it could work with something else simpler in the mix as well. I actually think the chair is the biggest outlier.

Thank you! You've each touched on something I've thought about: Robo & Voila - yes, I've wondered about the impact of a 4 poster bed in a small bedroom. While physically we are downsizing from a king to a queen, I realize that the posters will likely take up a different form of visual space. I've pared down all of my wall art to 1 oversized piece across from the bed in an effort to make the room less visually cluttered. DH is ok w/ me painting the bed white too should I choose. I wanted to try it as is first though and live w/ the room pulled together before going that route. This bed is a temporary bed for a few yrs. until we move & we will go back to a king sized bed.

voila - DH's bureau is nicely offset in an alcove which is nice so it's not in the immediate vicinity of the bed.

tishtoshnm - those aren't the exact bedside cabinets that I have. I used them more for color representation. Mine are that orangey color that often comes on w/ old pine. It's actually close to the bed color.

well I'm at work & should do so.

cant wait til we get the new mattress & box spring and I can pull it all together!

Oh yeah, their is a room sized jute rug.

See you guys are bringing points up that were in the back of mind! I didn't want to specifically state what some of my 'concerns' were because I know that somehow I can make it work. I just have to work harder! Interesting thought about staining it darker! I will have to add that to my assessment in the end! Our king was really tall. The headboard is almost as tall as me and the foot board up to my chest. W/ the configuration of the room I have 2 wall options to put the bed. 1 has the closet door hitting the bed when you open it and me having about 2' 1/2" (being super generous here) to maneuver w/o walking into the wall & possibly falling out the window if I wake up in a stupor lol! When arranged this way my bureau goes on the wall opposite the foot of the bed & leaves plenty of walking space.

The other wall means I have to put my dresser on my walk through side lengthwise and it gives me about 1' 1/2"on my side & it gets all cluttered looking w/ furniture because my bedside table is there too. Nothing can go on the wall at the foot of the bed this way because that's the wall the the bedroom door, closet & alcove are on.

I'd love to see what you have in mind but am unable to access that page. Could someone post your photo here? Pretty please?

I think you have exquisite taste, and I know your style is an inspiration for many here. I would certainly not call this collection "visual vomit", although when I scroll down through the photos and wind up at the bed, it's slightly jarring because it is so much lighter than the other pieces. As pal has pointed out though, it might feel more a part if you brought in another simple (light?) piece. I agree that the chair feels a bit out of place.

Nothing to add, but I like the silver with the hydrangeas. I have to take a picture of one of the photos I did. I have a similar silver pitcher that I used for the photo

Deeinohio - thanks souch for posting those pics! That must have taken quite sometime! Chair is easy enough to leave out! It currently resides in the office & is not committed to being in the MBR.

dlm - yes! Collected over time! That is the feel that I want.

I love your taste! I feel the bureau is the biggest issue, but if it's not in the room really, oh well. It is gorgeous. I would think maybe of replacing the IKEA cart with something in a wood like the bed. Simple lines, similar wood. Chair doesn't exactly work but I could live with it. I think, in a small room, it would be nice to keep the lighter color of the bed.

I have always loved your style. I like neutrals with a limited color palette, it can be quietly dramatic. That said, if there is a way to pull it together I know you can do it. But as the moodboard goes, what I can see with the bed and the items you have shown are the bedding, the accessories, the nightstands, the drapes and the white ikea bureau. Some of the richer colored items I cannot see in the space - especially your husbands bureau. You have such an eye for display - I wish you could do my house!

Yes, you can pull this off with different tones of furniture because all of your accessories are neutral. The bedding, dresser accessories, drapery, wall color, and artwork will provide cohesiveness. The furniture will provide contrast and interest. I think everyone's focusing too much on the furniture and not the other elements you're adding.

If you were adding "pops" of color, it wouldn't work.

I agree with Lisa, but then I like an eclectic look. One thought I had was to paint it Annie Sloan's grey chalk paint with a glaze over it. Would look great with your white walls, bedding and other elements in the room.

Was referring to painting the bed just for clarification.

I'm biased because I have a pencil post bed (natural pine), which I still love after 20+ years. It actually comes with a canopy, and sometimes I hang curtains on it. However, every so often I eye it and contemplate painting it black or a very dark stain. As far as small room: Yes, it works IMO.

nosoccer--lovely photos of small rooms w big beds; but each room is very carefully color curated (cannot believe i used that awful word). either the bed disappears b/c it matches the room so well, or the side tables mesh w/ the bed and provide the only accent color

That last photo...I swear I would do murder if I had a skylight right over my eyeballs!

yes, functionally very bad, but such pretty ethereal light on the pillows; like heaven

Some people actually like that. Our builder seriously suggested a "moon light".

As far as color, I thought the idea was to have a pretty much all-white room with a white bed and some wood/brown accent pieces.

I have a black painted pencil post bed with the same lines and styling as the one you are considering and some similar bedroom pieces including an empire style dresser similar to yours. I find that the pencil post bed is pretty neutral -- I have had everything from a red, white and blue patriotic thing to a black and white neutral thing to my current Susan Sargeant style riot-of-pattern-and-color and it always looks pretty good. With the neutral bedding you have selected, I think it will be fine. I have found that on the issue of visual space, I don't think it seems much bigger than a normal bed unless I put the testers on top -- with just the 4 posts it's fine, but once I draw that "box" with the testers and canopy pieces (even without a canopy) the room suddenly feels overwhelmed by the bed.My bedroom is about 11 x 14 and the bed is a queen so I think we are working with similar sizes as well.

If you don't already own the empire chest, I would consider looking for one without the burled mahogany -- mine is the same style but plain cherry and it blends better with the pencil post style than the flame mahogany one does. I do think you can make it work with the flame mahogany though -- but again, I think changing the color of the bed (I'd paint it black, not white, or stain it darker) would be key here. The nightstands in your mood board would be beautiful with the bed as is.

Thank you very much! You have given me great suggestions and feedback. Should I choose to paint the bed after living w/ it in the room for a period, I really like the suggestion of grey instead of white. I hadn't thought of that! All of the suggestions that you gave are easily doable w/ other pieces of furniture that I have in the house and can easily be 'exchanged'. I had commented to DH that he could easily make a canopy for me too if I chose to do so down the line.

I hope you guys don't get me wrong about the bed. I really do love it very much. In fact my brother who has built beautiful pencil post beds told me that for my wedding present I could pick the piece of furniture and I said "PENCIL POST BED!". He is also extremely lackadaisical and that was also 16yrs ago. I finally stopped asking. So when this bed presented itself to me on CL I jumped w/o thinking. Of course!

Well, I'm getting ready for a yard sale next wknd. so I have to go through the basement now. Here's hoping that I make enough money to buy the Queen sized mattress and box frame and I can get this done soon!

Oh BTW lkplatow (and the yard sale is at the same place as the last one!), I do have the bureau already. I saw it at a booth at the antique co-op that my mom is a part of and she struck a deal of $200 for it for me and I put it on layaway. I can't say that the flames of DH's are as brilliant as the one in the pic that I posted but I also never cleaned it it up nor had DH refinish it yet so it is kind of dull.
