How High to go???

We have been working on our backsplash so please excuse the mess. Also, my camera takes terrible pics.

My question is, how high do I go with the backsplash behind the range? In all honesty, I would love to do the entire wall! However, my husband is the one doing it and he has no desire to do this. Either way, what do you think? Stop now, go higher or do the entire wall?

Thanks in advance!!

Amy

So pretty! I agree that it def. looks a bit unfinished as-is, maybe some molding/edging is called for?

How about a couple more rows so it's at the center of hood and level with top of door (not door trim, just door.)

Seems like that would be a natural stopping point then. Very pretty tile.

I would go all the way up for sure and maybe all the way across. Can you post a picture, is there an obvious stopping point cross ways.

I think being level with the doors would look odd. It looks fine as is. Of course, it would look even better if the entire wall was done, but that might require some serious sweet takin'!

Here are the sides walls where the tile could stop. Also, we still need to add the crown molding on the two upper cabs.

You have a perfect stopping points, I would do the whole wall, up and across.....sorry DH.

On second thought, I think going straight up to the ceiling would be the logical thing to do:

BTW, I cannot believe how awesome your vent hood is. DH did an amazing job.

The whole wall would be fantastic!

If you do go all the way up and across, I would paint the top where the hood meets the ceiling black or whatever color your hood is. With the break in color, it would look a bit odd.

Too late, but I would have stopped at the bottom of the hood. I think if you decide to go to the ceiling it would look better to do the whole wall. OR just let it be where it ends now.

Thanks mag, what about doing the entire wall instead of just going to the ceiling in the hood area?

Ideally, yes, I would do the entire wall. I was just thinking about a possible compromise with DH.

lol. I can tile myself.... it would just take a lot longer and he would have to do the cuts. Maybe I can talk him into it! I will working on it.

Off topic, Mag, do you have your house on the market? I know you were planning on doing that. Just curious what you are up to...

If you can do it, go for it! However, another thought - what about painting the side walls the same as the wall to the right?

Yes mag I have thought of that. Not a bad idea.

We are waiting for the Spring to put the house on the market. I here that a house across the street from me is going on the market too and they are going to be priced at the top of the market, plus that house is 1000sf larger than ours. We will price in the middle so strategically speaking, it might be good for both houses to be on the market at the same time. Upon first glance, our house will look like a bargain.

I would have done as cindymac and stopped at the bottom of the hood using bullnose trim, but second choice would be what mag suggested......set your stopping point with paint.

I've done lots of tiling and know that tiling over and behind those upper cabinets/frig would be a real pain! ;)

I look forward to seeing your place once you get it on the market. I bet your house has FAR more interest than you neighbors could ever have!

My 2c - I wouldn't do the whole wall. It would just be way too much shiny for me. You have shiny stainless steel, shiny glass cabinet and now shiny tile on the whole wall which would result in a lot of shiny competition. It's a look that really (I think) doesn't suit your space.

I would do behind the hood to highlight the hood and then leave it. Oh and I don't like the darker paint on that wall.

I just think you're overloading the wall with detail and it's entering the territory of mish-mash.

If possible I would just leave it. I actually would have left at about the first edge of the hood (not the bottom but the next edge)

I think you're good stopping where you are. If you were to imagine the hood as a window, the tile typically goes partway up the window frame, maybe about one third of the way. I don't think stopping under the hood is enough tile for the bulk of the hood. Tile never goes to the ceiling over a hood (in my world lol) when there's no cabinets to frame it. It doesn't make sense to tile over a doorway or over cabinets. The mock-ups look off to me.

I think I'd stop where your are and bring the slightly lighter color of the wall on the left side over to the hood wall. I think it will set off the tile nicely.

Agree with blfenton--stop now or if it's possible to remove 4 or 5 rows without damaging wall, even better. Cap with a bullnose or not. Beautiful kitchen and love that hood!

I think we will leave it for now, however, what I really want it to the entire wall. Maybe someday!

Thanks for all of your suggestions and feedback!

Noooooo! Tell DH you want this as your early Xmas (or pick your own holiday) present. If you want the whole wall tiled, why quit now?

Good idea Chispa! I will do that. Wish my bday was coming up. It is not until Feb! I will still beg for it though!

Another vote for whole wall. Sorry to your DH, but maybe an offer of a massage will keep him going. It looks great so far.

Just read in our local magazine yesterday that going all the way up to the ceiling on the whole wall is all the rage here (DC).

Absolutely would do the entire wall.

What is unusual about this kitchen is there are doors on both sides of the stove. You can go up to the ceiling on a window wall but I've never seen tiling done over doors and a refrigerator.

I'd have DH show you how to do the cuts, and you can finish the job on your own. That's what I'd do (power tools are fun!). That way, you get exactly what you want -- no compromises. Beautiful backsplash tile! Sorry if I missed it in other threads, but mind sharing what that is?

Here is an example of tile with a small wood border that might work.

    It is crema marfil.

I'm not sure I'd want to do the whole wall. I had originally thought straight up like Magdelina first did, but after seeing it, it wasn't quite finished. And though I like the idea of that whole wall tiled, I also like her idea of bringing the darker paint above the doors. I'd go a little further like this though.

I would take the extra time to finish now!! whole wall would look best, but would def at least go straight to the ceiling and paint the 2 side bits!! (maybe learn to use the tile saw!!?? :)

We are going to definitely finish the entire wall now! I think it will really look the best. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and suggestions and lovely mockups! I know that takes time and I appreciate it so much!

    Stay tuned!
