Before I read Cawaps response, I had excatly the same idea. Fill in the whole wall with built ins and do fake fronts over the fixed wall areas.

Who comes up with these floor plan designs and actually thinks it is a good idea!

The vent for the fireplace is behind the wall. I had been thinking the same thing but the built ins I see are always open shelves.

There's definitely a tendency to use that space for display, but not necessarily.

You could remove the black cabinets and install open shelves painted the same color as the wall.

I would 'fake' symmetry with fake cab doors, as mentioned by cawaps. I really don't think that you need open shelving up there. I think symmetry is the important part.
