Horrible noise switching zones?

Hi we moved into a new to us home and the irrigation system works fine except it makes a horrible long banging sound when switching between zones four and six, there is no zone 5. There used to be a zone five but the owners must have disconnected it. I can't recreate this noise turning on and off individual zones. What could this be and how can I fix it?

what your likely hearing is what is termed water hammer. the usual fix is to install a pressure regulator but in your case if you have valves with flow controls it may be possible to simply adjust the flows through valves 4 and 6 to reduce or stop the hammering.

Thank you, we have to contact an irrigation company to drain the system for winter soon so I will speak with the them about the noise.
