This is one small part of the process. We may not get enough heat and long enough summer. for hips to ripen. But I'm going to try.

Carol, that's great! Bet you are super excited and can't wait for spring to do what the bees normally do:)) If you do your crosses on the first blooms it should be ok. About 90 days minimum, longer if possible. Just don't let them freeze. Light frost is still ok. And remember not all hips change colour, some stay green.

Hi- me again- if you're looking for roses that have fast-ripening hips, look at Schneezewerg or any of the rugosas. Morden Centennial also ripens in about 60 days rather than the usual 90+.

I've come to that conclusion, Donald (that's my hubby's name). My friend, Cherie, grows OGRs and a lot of rugosas and ruoga crosses. We're going to try to marry our two sets of roses, whereupon my roses provide the pollen, and hers the hips. Maybe we'll make a really beautiful hardy rose. You never know. :)
