What made these holes in the ground?

My sister found these two holes in the ground outside her home. They are each about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Any idea what made these holes?

Is there a palo verde tree near that spot? Like 10-15 feet away at the most?

I would guess if they are 1 1/2" diameter I have no idea since I would have expected dug up dirt around the hole. Based on size and the fact it is not closed off I would have guessed rock squirrels. But I wonder where the excavated dirt went. Wind blew it away?

Nope, no wind. I agree that it's odd that there's no excavated dirt. My experience with gophers is a pile of dirt sitting next to the hole - but then these holes are pretty small for a gopher. A big bug? Some kind of borer?

I'm asking her, but i know what you're thinking - palo verde beetle, right? Perhaps they are 'exit holes'.

I have had lizards do that. They don't leave any dirt. I have also had tarantulas do something similar.
