Be sure the credenza under the TV is 25% wider than the set. You need lined curtains for a better drape and light control.

I just commented on this - it was on another thread I guess! First decoenthusiaste, has two good ideas - about the size of the TV credenza and lined drapes - she's right. As for the orange area rug - yes I think it's too much with the patterned turquoise drapes. Stay with your neutral palette - grays, whites and blacks for the background. The area rug can be patterned, but keep it in your neutral color palette. I like your painted turquoise chest and turquoise drapes as your accent color. If you want to bring in orange - do it in a small way like pillows for the sofa. Over all, you're doing a great job, Alysia. I love your wood floors, wall color, trim color and you hung your drapes perfectly at the right height.

The TV is way too large and bulky on that stand with a young child in the family. You need to take on that situation as a first priority please. Place it on a lower, more substantial media center. Go with a plain rug or one with a very small pattern so it will not conflict with the drapes, (which are lovely).

It's been on that stand thru 3 children but I agree my hubby is making me this

Would a 4 foot by 6 ft be big enough ? For a rug

You are probably going to need at least an 8x10' rug. It will be difficult to find one that size for less than $200. Probably looking at between $300-$500. Try overstock.com, Wayfair.com, HomeGoods.

You want the front legs of the sectional to be on the rug. If you cannot get a large one, it would be better to leave the floor bare. Look for a couple of sm footstools for in front of sectional to add color instead of a sm rug.

difficult to try for 2 colors and not clash with distinct pattern on curtains. If not these try allmodern, rugsdirect, eurway. I would bring colors together with pillows, let me know if you need help with that or want me to remove these.

Art should be because you love it, not to match a specific color, i could fit far more, I am sure someone can help you there.

Ok, you still need something else for the orange unless there is a third pillow with orange? The picture of children is fine. It is art that means something to you. You were talking about 3 canvasses? I definitely see the 3 turquoise items.

Hi Alysia- I like your vision - you have some great ideas! I like your neutral gray diamond patterned rug - the picture reads kind of blue gray though. I like havingfun's third choice - the gray and turquoise patterned rug. You definitely need an 8x10. Maybe try Target for a rug - they have great stylish decor that doesn't cost a fortune. I also love your selection of pillows! Love! Maybe also get a throw to fold over the arm of your sofa in orange (or turquoise). I like your idea of 3 canvases over your sofa-it's such a wide space. Oh, btw, the word credenza is being used instead of TV stand.

I just thought of another idea for a rug- sisal or jute. Family friendly and neutral. Check to see if rugsusa carries them.

You can select many photos of the kids & family, have them enlarged & frame them with inexpensive frames in several colors. Arrange them on the floor before hanging on the wall. Fill up 3/4 the length of the sofa space & bring them about 6" above the back of the sofa. Check out Overstock, Wayfair & Ikea for sisal or jute rugs.

Nice floors and like the dark gray taupe wall color. Next time you buy furniture, don't buy a sectional -- it limits furniture placement options. You don't actually need a rug to define your seating area because your huge sectional does that.

If you want a rug because you want to protect the wood floors or to add color or warmth to the room, that is different. A 5'x7' for where feet land when sitting on most of the sofa would likely do either. If you add a rug and want a coffee table, you'd need a narrow rectangular or elongated oval one -- beware getting a knee knocker.

In lieu of a rug and/or coffee table, you might consider an ottoman.

If you're using thin curtains rather than drapes that would provide light and privacy control, you may want to add white mini blinds to control the light and provide the privacy. Otherwise...

You might consider getting a wider double curtain rod so you could have sheers on the inside rod and have the drapes pull back enough so all three windows are visible when the drapes are open. That would let you use drapes to decorate and add color without blocking natural light.

White side table is too stark a contrast with the sofa. If it is made of wood and in good condition, consider stripping off the paint and finishing it with the same wood finish you'll be using for your new credenza/tv stand.

Using that same wood/finish for a tall cabinet with glass doors for the blank wall to the left as you enter the room as a stuff cabinet would also be a good idea for both display and storage with minimal work: you put what you want displayed at the front of the shelves to be visible thru the glass doors and the other stuff behind those items. You can store and/or display family treasures -- framed family photos, candy dishes, candle holders with candles, most interesting flower vases, nick knacks, trophies, mementoes of trips and occasions -- without needing to dust them and can alter what is displayed and what is just stored by moving the items in the cabinet about according to the season or occasion or your mood or whim.

For good quality wood furniture, a natural wood look is always better than any color of paint.
