New breakfast nook table

last modified: 11 years ago

Some of you may recall from ever so long ago, I talked about getting a custom made table for our breakfast nook.

Well we finally had it made, and we are most pleased. I got a lot of pushback from the folks here on the shape, but we really liked the shape due to it's functionality, so we stuck with that. The table will comfortably seat 7, 8 if we're a close family.

We went with cherry wood to match the nearby kitchen cabinets. Though we gave him the same stain, it did come out lighter, but I'm happy with it as it allows the pretty graining to show through better. The color also blends nicely with the color in the flooring.

(The table is centered in the space, but I can't get directly across from it to take the picture so it looks off center...but it isn't.)

I also had him lightly distress the top so I won't be panicking about every little dent and ding.

He did a great job with the proportioning of the arch and the taper we had him put on the arch and on the legs.

Now I need to get some new chairs for this side of the table...and I'm going to need him to make me a couple of small bookcases to use as end tables for our FR couch...and I need a new coffee table in the library....

It is lovely, Annie! The wood has a beautiful depth of color and just the right amount of grain showing. The shape is brilliantly suited to the space and overall it looks like the fine, custom job it is. Great planning and you are lucky to have a very good furniture guy!

    Thank you all so kindly.

I meant to add that the segmental arch shape is a theme that is repeated throughout our house, including the kitchen island and the soffit over the island, and the flooring between the kitchen and FR, so we wanted to work it into the table too. I think he did a great job.

Poor DH. Yesterday, he had to take apart the old one he banged together out of scrap lumber that we used "temporarily" for 5 years!

The cherry stain looks really nice with the cushions and the valances and the rustic base adds some interest without being busy. Looks great!

Very, very nice! Love the cherry wood. At first glance, it has a simplistic design that belies the genius of all the fabulous features within it.

That was really smart to get it lightly distressed. Especially for a table you will use every day. It is perfect there and the wood is so pretty. Enjoy!

I like it and I am glad you went with a simpler top instead of some of the designs that were discussed. The cherry will darken. My table was pink when I got it. Very dark now, and it happened pretty quickly. Do not keep anything in one place on it or you will stop the oxidation in that spot. (Like a bowl in the middle). It needs to be exposed to the light equally.

Thanks, pal. I will be sure to move stuff around on top so I don't get a single spot in the middle. That's the last thing I want.

Based on pal's comment I got a brass trivet with felt feet that I'm putting my centerpiece orchid on and can move it so no spots.

    My orchid has been converted!

Ever since Pal mentioned about not leaving the centerpiece in the center all the time, I put the orchid on a trivet and every morning I move it to a different spot on the table. So it's now either a Wandering Jew or a Roamin' Catholic!

Lovely, I like that it's lighter than the cabinets.

My table and chairs are darker than my cabs...

you did the opposite, it works well, and

it's very effective. Matching the table with the cabs

    wouldn't have been as dramatic.
