Japanese Maple sprout help for winter needed

Hello,
I am looking for advice on what to do with my Japanese maple sprouts over this upcoming winter, we live in NE Ohio. The adult tree seeded last year, the sprouts appeared under the adult tree this spring, and my wife dug several of them and planted them in small pots. A few have died, a few have grown to 6" to 8" in height, and we would like to ensure that they survive the winter. I do not know the specific variety of tree that we have, but I can get pictures if it helps. We are inexperienced in Japanese maple care - the adult tree was there when we bought the house. Should we transplant into the ground? Does it help to locate them near the house for warmer soil? Should they be moved inside for their first winter?
Thank you in advance for any advice you can give.
