Hello leiahm ... believe it or not, on a few occasions, I've successfully wintered lavender outdoors here in zone 3. After the ground had begun to freeze a bit in mid November, I mulched the plant heavily with leaves and then that had gotten covered in snow. Friends also had luck just by keeping their plant piled with snow. Now, I know that your climate is different and I wonder about the use of leaves and if such would become wet and rot the lavender? You could also pot the plant up and winter it over in a cold storage room or an attached unheated garage, mine works ideal for such a purpose, the temp in the garage doesn't drop much below 20 F.

Thanks for the ideas... I'm thinking that mulching might work... I took some cutting in case it doesn't hopefully they take off regardless because I want more!! I'm not real sure about the wetness like you said but i am thinking that as long as I didn't do it too early it might work.

Yes, holding off on mulching until frost has penetrated down somewhat is definitely a good idea. Here in the north, once the ground freezes, it most likely stays that way and we "generally" maintain at least some snow cover until the warm of spring arrives .... though, major thaws do occur that make short work of the snow and endanger plants that are bit more on the tender side. A big mild spell is nice for us humans to enjoy, though not always such a great thing for the plants!
