I harvested fresh seeds of Aesculus pavia, Red Buckeye yesterday. This species is best sown in fall, right after collection and should not be allowed to dry out. Seeds need to be kept moist until sowing if you decide not to plant them immediately. This native shrub or small tree puts out beautiful red flowers in early spring before the deciduous trees start growing their leaves, giving the landscape a burst of red color. Because of this, it also serves as an important nectar plant for hummingbirds as they migrate north in the spring. Red buckeye is hardy to zone 4.
