Scott's Winterizer, or any other Scott's product is not acceptable to any organic grower.

I don't always agree with kimmsr but in this case, he is right on. Scott's Winterizer is not an organic product. If you have access to Espoma products, look for their fall winterizer lawn fertilizer. Or use the Milorganite.

Second, applying that level of N this late in the season to anything other than turf lawns can be harmful. N induces rapid shoot and foliar growth that has insufficient time to harden off and can be very easily damaged by winter cold. And finally, applying this product to dormant or empty beds is just wasting money - by the time you are ready to replant in spring, that N will have mineralized, volatilized or just leached away with rain fall and/or snow melt.

If you want to increase the fertility of dormant planting areas, plant a cover crop or lay on a thick layer of compost or shredded leaves. The compost or leaves are appropriate additions to any other planted area of your garden as well.
