any wood is going to dent, theres not a single species of wood available in any form that will not dent if something is dropped on it. The finish on the other hand is different, what kind of finish is on the floor?

The finish is a satin. They (Mirage) call it semi-gloss but it's not. Just frustrated - wish our contractor/floor salesman/architect (someone!) had been kind or knowledgable enough to give us a heads up before we spent $20K on floors and installation. Would have done concrete over radiant and simply refinished the existing wood (oak) in a darker color....

Maple shows everything. Had it been say a red oak, you'd have to hunt for the dent.

Sounds like a specification error - no one asked you what your expectations were. The best news for you is that the finish of Mirage floors tend to conform to the dents and resists splitting, cracking, then chipping off like other hard, stiff and brittle finishes.

We’re considering Mirage as well - Imagine collection, Papyrus - along with a few others. We were leaning towards the maple because (a) maple is harder than oak and (b) fewer knots etc. it still has a slightly wirebrushed finish so we are hoping this would hide any dents/scratches (with a 100lb lab that’s a concern)

The comments on here about maple not holding up as well as the oak concern me - is this true - and given the hardness, why would this be the case?

We paused the project - will probably pick it up this year - but are still leaning towards going with the mirage maple. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help

Installing Mirage Flooring is the biggest renovation regret we have. They are gorgeous when new but SOFT unlike ANY hardwood flooring I've EVER seen. I will restate EVER seen... Permanent dings and dents everywhere from general and not so heavy use. We NEVER had this problem with regular hardwood floors in other homes. Our old floors were lived on the same as Mirage and remained beautiful over the years. The softness of Mirage flooring has been absolutely maddening and their product is a total waste of money. I'd rip them out today if I could.

After a long delay, we did go with Mirage flooring for our house. We went with Mirage’s Maple Rock Cliff engineered.

It’s been nearly 5 months since it was completed, with a 90 lb chocolate lab running back and forth on the floors daily - and we couldn’t be happier. The floors have held up amazingly well - no scratches or dents (at least none we could see).

I know this is a somewhat old thread but thought I’d update it since there are numerous negative comments on mirage.

Installed 3000 sq ft in a new home. Complete disaster six years on. Faded and if you look at it, will swear it scratches. Finish has completely worn in some areas. Now working with Mirage t see about their warranty. Emails do not give me warm fuzzies. Need to pull up a piece of floor to send them... seriously? Sonora Maple floor

We installed mirage floors 10 years ago. Maple cashmere. We have semi gloss in a bedroom and I do not like those as much, I do prefer the matte look of cashmere. Our previous dog nails created scratches in the floor. Our current dog is twice the weight but doesn’t scratch the floor. Odd how their paws lay/ walk differently. There are dents when anything metal like the vacuum drops or anything sharp. It has yellowed which I don’t think is unusual but thought engineered would prevent that. We went with mirage because we could sand and refinish. Haven’t investigated the cost yet. I would like to continue it into the bedrooms but not sure if I can get the floor to match correctly.

Yellowed? Mild? Or you just look at it too often. Seriously. That's unusual with today's water based finishes, which most prefinished manufacturers utilize. I truly believe the 'performance' marketing and other wordy stuff some manufacturers use create high expectations resulting in complaints.

Uptown, maureen121 is probably referring to the color change in Maple, which goes from a peachy light yellow to a more orangish yellow that also ends up being browner when compared to newer Maple. There is nothing in any finish that will stop the color change in natural finished Maple.

The wood used in engineered flooring isn't fundamentally different than that used in solid flooring so it acts similarly in regards to color change. Frankly, I was once caught off guard by how much a ten year old Maple had changed in color when I bought some new Maple to patch it. We ended up taping off the newer wood and using a tinted clearcoat to get a match.
