I winder if it's a juniper. I tried googling it but there are so many cultivars of junipers that I couldn't narrow down which one it is. (I couldn't find the search button on this site. Too bad they had to change a great site...)

The website has undergone a lot of changes, but most greatly enhance and improve the experience. At the top of every page is a box that states 'Search in GardenWeb'. You can use that or simply use Google, which is what I would do.

Your description of "tiny beige berries of some kind growing all along the branch" doesn't ring a bell for any conifer that I can think of. The berries aren't scale insects, by any chance, are they?

You can post pictures here.....that would solve the dilemma in a snap.

'Small evergreen leaves' .... What shape are they? Needles or conventional leaves? If the latter, what shape? Could the 'berries' be buds? Without a picture this is just guess work.

Blueheron, we are a stickler for details, lol. I'm still wondering about the brown 'buds' along the stem.

I did click on the link but that isn't your tree. We often get pictures which people say are 'like' their tree but which turn out to be very different species. We are doing our best but without that all important image we are all just guessing and you are not getting an answer of the quality we would like to give you. If you really can't take a photo, how about some more description. For example, how big is 'small' and what size is 'tiny'? And have you cut open a 'berry' to see what's inside. Are they single or in clusters? Are they shiny, scaly, bloomed?

Me, too. Could they be tiny seeds or cones of some kind?

Well to start with do you have a digital camera or phone you can take a picture with? If not do you know anyone who does? Has your friend who owns the shrub got one?

Voila - "a male Eastern Red Cedar will have tiny tan-colored "pine cones" on the branches. These are the polllen-bearing structures and are about the size of a sesame seed." Sounds like the little "berries" I am talking about.
