Sounds like bury in dirt method. Looks like it takes longer to build a stem and could lead to disease as all growth will be new.

I don't get why this is done. You can get better results, laying down, by modifying this method.

Take cuttings. Wrap ends in wet paper towels. Stick in plastic box. You can fit an exponential amount more stacked like alternating logs. Roots may entangle but damage should be minimal.
