Maybe something different, there is a lot of wood, although it is nice. Posted pic shows a mix of textures and upholstery which adds interest.

I like to throw in different things here and there..

I would angle the rug so that it is parallel with the fireplace and then put one sofa along the edge opposite the window and the other at right angles to it . Then I would put the single chair angled towards the TV at the side of the fireplace. You would then still have full view of the Tzv but the room would look cozier . The rug should be big enough so that either all the front legs of the furniture sit on it or all four legs are on it. Either way they all need to have the same legs on or of. If you decide to keep your more square arrangement I would pull it more away from the window and put the single chair legs on the rug. The curtains should definitely match and I like the lighter look of the kitchen curtains . A shag rug would definitely give you that retro vibe nd add interest.

I think you need something higher, all the way the the ceiling, over the fireplace. And more light up there, maybe a picture light shining down. The TV stand looks very dark. What about refinishing it using textured paintable wallpaper like this http://littlebighouseontheprairie1.blogspot.com/2011/10/buffet-reveal.html but with red and soft gold? It would give it a real wow factor and visually drown out the TV hanging above. putting vinyl inserts into the glass to hide the electronics would help too. I agree that the window treatments in the living room should match the dining. I like all of your planter/vases, but you have too many. Take all of them out and add a few back in at a time--definitely feel you have too many in front of the mirror.
I agree, window treatments should match when that close together and on the same wall. Consider no valance--it looks like it is pulling the room down and blocking light. Add additional curtain panels between the windows, and a couple on each end--and be sure to hang on a decorative rod--wood or metal. You can splice shorter rods together to form the look of one continuous rod. Hang high, like in the eating area.

The thing that jumps out at me is that the furniture is not touching the rug. It appears to just be floating. The rug will anchor the furniture. Simply place the front legs of all pieces about 6" onto it. This one thing will immediately change the feel of the room. It will suddenly be a cozy, welcoming space.

Remove the valance, if not replacing the curtains. If replacing them hang the new drapery panels high and wide to allow as much natural light in as possible. Use matching drapes in the dining area.

I think a lighter colored rug would do wonders too. It seems a little too monotone and dark.

I was thinking a lighter rug and lighter sofa as well. What are your thoughts?

Just be careful not to go the other way..too much light and end up without any contrast..LOL!

I have no objection to different curtains, but the one in the kitchen area needs a little more of a pop. It is just too dull. The one big thing I have is big tv's. I think there are lovely cabinets that would be more in tune with the look of the room. The one I have is about the length of the current table and is about 5 feet high. Classic in the look. I just don't like it when the TV becomes the elephant in the room; so to speak.
