The photo is kind of dark but here are my suggestions. Move the candle holders from in front of the mirror to the table top. Add some decorative items on top of the buffet in complementary colors to the decor of the room. Add an area rug that picks up the colors in the room. Add a nice lighting fixture.

It is a little dark and there's nothing with any color.

I'm going to suggest a painting instead of the mirror. You surely can use the mirror elsewhere in your home.

Add two tall thin buffet style lights on either side of the painting. Art will give your room color and personality.

Do you have a chandelier over the table? You could add one, possibly.

A bigger centerpiece that picks up color from the art.

Your room has a lot of different styles going on.

The brass candlesticks, brass curtain rods, table centrepiece and swagged curtains are formal and traditional.

The dotted sheers are modern and playful. (They should be shortened so they just touch the floor.)

The table, mirror and chairs are contemporary.

I'd suggest you go with a more contemporary look. Let the curtains hang straight down. Go with more black (or charcoal) accents to look more modern and to echo your chair color. So replace the brass candlesticks and curtain rod, or spray paint them charcoal/gray. Replace the table centrepiece with something larger and more contemporary.

Replacing the mirror with a picture is a great idea. The size is correct.

The ceiling is very low this is why I went for a light fixture like this

If your room is a standard height ceiling (and it looks as if it is) the room will look better with a hanging fixture. The bottom of the fixture should be 2 feet from the table top anyway, so the room height is not an issue. Your ceiling fixture does not make the room look taller.

I'm not really good at oneline searching - maybe someone else could help. I'd suggest a wide, flat bowl in an interesting shape. No fancy china, no dried flower arrangements. Search Houzz for "modern rooms" and see the kind of stuff they use. If you are going to replace the mirror with a painting, or add a rug, make those purchases first and tie in the colors. It's much easier to find a bowl that goes with a painting or rug that you like, than the other way around. LeeLee had some good ideas above.

no holdbacks on the drapes. let them fall straight. since the supports need to be moved out anyway consider moving them up and out and put rings on your drapes if you open and close them. some of the rings can be jumped to the outside of the supports. if you dont want to open and close them you can leave them shirred open.

oops i missed the crown there. well if you can get another inch up its good, otherwise its out.

I would let drapes hang straight and get a sheer that is close to same color with no pattern. Add lamps to buffet, use art instead of mirror. chandelier. In above I put African violets on table and a nice bowl in front of art in one of it's colors.

On the buffet add a tray with useful items--see above pics of the buffets. A live plant or flowers are always a nice touch.

I must disagree with a light fixture being 24 inches from the top of the table--it should be around 36 to 38 inches so people can see each other when seated. Higher if ceilings are taller.

For 8' ceilings, I recommend 30-32" from table surface (unless you are hosting the NBA on a regular basis) and 3" for every foot of higher ceiling. I had 10' ceilings in my last condo and had bottom of chandelier 32" from table and it was perfect.

Also put low wattage lights in lamps and a dimmer on the chandelier.

Leelee and Susan, your are correct that my 24" was too low. Oops!

Is this room dark or is it just the photo? You're getting advice that is appropriate to a dark room (remove drapes, big crystal chandelier) but with your big window I am not sure that the room is really dark.

The look you want may be better described as contemporary or transitional, rather than modern. Search Houzz for pictures of Contemporary Dining Rooms or Transitional Dining Rooms to get some ideas, then add them to your inspiration photos.

You'll see that some contemporary rooms have bright colors. And others that are neutral look good because the interest comes from different textures. You'll soon get an idea of the look that you find attractive. Get an idea of what you really like before you buy new things or discard what you have.

In the meantime, do you have any plants or large bowls that you can put on your table or buffet, to give you an idea of the size and shape you may be looking for?

Thrift stores can be a great source for decor items. Find an item that's the right size and shape, make it your own with a can of spray paint, and you can try out different things without a big investment.

The picture is a bit dark, but I think by adding a splash of color to the room would really brighten the feel. Also, a decorative hanging light fixture for over the table top would really pull the elegant look together. Best of luck to you!

I think the room is just to neutral...I would paint the walls a cheerful color...buttery yellow or honeydew would be lovely but not to dramatic and would contrast nicely with both oak and the chairs...the windows are to formal..yes the dotted sheer is fun but better in a child's room than dining room..I'd suggest patterned panels and plain sheers

With the tab top, definitely not formal. I'd describe the style as very casual/country. Not right in this room. You're looking for a more sophisticated contemporary look.

Do you need sheers? How about just using the drapes you had, without sheers? Or if you need sheers for privacy, they should be very plain with no pattern and no tab top.

I love the buffet lamps suggested by Susan 2494 and her idea that the mirror still can work in this room. I would suggest you get a bookcase about four feet high to place against the wall that is opposite the mirror. Then, get another pair of the lamps Susan 2494 suggested and place each one at an end of the bookcase. I like the way the color of the mirror frame ties in with the color of the draperies. If you do shorten the sheers, you might use the extra fabric to create a runner or scarf to go down the center of the table, lengthwise. I love the playfulness of the large polka dots because they add a cheerful tone to the room. If you have enough sheer fabric, you might make removable covers for small bolster pillows to place at the seat/back juncture of the dining chairs. You could use plain white fabric under the sheer polka--dot print in making the pillow covers. The same could be said for having a solid white fabric under the sheer table runner, and it would be possible to do contour quilting effect by stitching around each large polka dot with thread that matches the dot color.
