We are painting a house that had wall paper in every room. The wall paper is removed and so is the glue. The walls were a nightmare and required a lot of sanding due to odd textures and who knows what. It was recommended to me to use oil-based primer instead of water based. Is that true? Or can I just use water based instead of messing with the oil-based. Also if I do can I still use water based paint over the primer? Thank you!

I have used water based Zinsser 123 on many projects and have not been disappointed. I have heard that oil based paint is being phased out in some states.

No paint can level out damaged areas. If there are large areas of damage, repair with drywall mud before priming. I've done this and it wasn't as hard as I thought. Small dents can be fixed with wall spackle. Your local reputable paint store can also give you some recommendations.
