You're OK, the plant is fine. Except for the one spot of damage the other brown areas of the leaf bases are normal.

I agree with Gonzer. Keep it hanging to take advantage of air circulation, and maybe hang it upside down (leaves pointing down or at a downward angle) to avoid any water collecting at the "base". I think it's interesting that it has a lot of roots. If your others look good, then this one will benefit from your care :)

Particularly the first link. Lately I've been seeing pictures of this plant here and there (I'm going through way back issues of the Bromeliad Society Journal and it's been in there ca. 1964ish, so it's not a strange, new plant). In 2013 I got one that bloomed (surprise!) and started to pup, but the main plant died (no surprise) and the pup didn't make it :( Mine had stiff leaves like in the pictures; yours may have looser/less stiff leaves, so.... And you probably have completely different growing conditions than I do, so yours will likely be just fine.

Thanks again debbyabqm,mine has softer less stiff leaves on it and not the dagger leaves that some others have. I'm thankful that I don't have to worry about poking an eye out on this guy lol
