I have two adenium that I left on the porch this year, and they grew so tall and long that I'm going to try it on them rather than just trim all that growth.

Like an air layer, but only on one side instead of all the way around, and wedged open, which is almost the opposite of a traditional air layer where you encase it in plastic/seal it.

I wonder if success depends on a hot, very consistently humid environment? Also curious if this would work for other succulents/plants/trees?

it's also interesting that what is called (translated as?) air layering is not at all what most people call air layering - it's propagation through cuttings that are allowed to cure in the air, if I understand it.

can't translate but the pictures at that link all look like how I have always seen air layering done. Cut all the way around a branch (just past the cambium), peel a stripe of bark/cambium, (maybe add rooting hormone to top of stripe (towards apex of tree)), cover with something like long fibered sphagnum or similar to keep it damp/humid but not wet, wrap up however you please (newspaper, plastic, etc). in a few weeks/months there will be roots coming from the top of the stripe you cut in the bark, and you cut off your new rooted tree below that (near or at the bottom of the stripe)

Just wondering, any updates? I started this myself 3 days ago and I noticed the cut drying up and no roots. I took off most of the leaves on the plant to see if that is the problem. I'm thinking the plants natural instinct is to heal the wound but how do you trigger it to grow roots? Maybe rooting hormone? I'm wondering if you had any luck. Thanks

Thanks Stuart for your update. I just cut some of the scab off and rubbed with lanolin mixed with powdered root hormone. I hope this works. I hope your method works for you too.

Stuart do you tie the knot for aesthetic's or to make it not so tall? What does an older knot look like?

Marica. I did it for aestetic's. Here is the knot 6 mounth old.

I think this will become thicker or will cut after a few months or years lol.

I've taken cuttings, tossed them into a tray, forgotten about them, and gone back to find them all with roots coming from the bottom. They seem to root better when they are just left out in the open air.

Stuart, did your half cutting experiment root? I just did the half cut on two of my leggy plants...

Cynthia. I did'nt waited long enough for it to root properly. I cut it of and put it in soil but to much watering killed it.

Yardakani. I don't know wich zone you are so i can't tell if this time of the year is right. In my Tropical climate everyday is right to cut. 45 degree angle is important so that water don't sit on the wound. I would cut it above the last lower leaf. Others members will assist you soon.

Yardakani. Cutting the head off will not fatten up the caudex.

I live in Tehran, Iran (middle east )it is still hot here and will get even hotter.

Stuart It will have to grow on me some more. I like the lifted roots with it looks more balanced.
