What have been called selling names in Britain are important now, with nurseries frequently using these to underscore their ownership of patented or trademarked introductions. One way to differentiate selling names without keeping track of and including their patent numbers or trademark status is presenting them in a different font. Another way is enclosing them in brackets, as in Choisya ternata [Sundance] = 'Lich'. While it remains common to mistakenly write selling names as cultivar names, for instance Choisya ternata 'Sundance' this is an inaccurate representation, the selling names and cultivar names being two different things. The selling name is a marketing device used to promote the cultivar, which unlike the cultivar name does not refer specifically to the plant itself.

The R.H.S. used to have pages on this kind of thing up but I can't find any of it now.
