I have some steps that will be dug into a slope in my backyard. They'll then be finished with stacked stone. I assume the landscapers will dig rough shapes of steps into the dirt and then apply the stacked stone (similar to how they did steps in my pool), is that correct? If that's how they do it, then how do the landscapers bond the stacked stone to the dirt? See picture below. These are bricks and not stacked stone, but it's the only pic I could really find that showed it clearly. Red circled area is what I'm curious about.
