Adam - You're quite right thinking your plant is an Aechmea. Aechmeas aren't really my strong point but I do have one similar to yours and it's a species called Ae. lueddemanniana (quite a mouthful).

If you go to http://fcbs.org/pictures.htm and do a search in the species section you will find a few more pictures for comparison.
