I'll repeat essentially what I said there.

I use paper towels as little as possible. Only for really gross things that I don't want to use a rag for....like in the rare case my dog left us a little pile. So I keep them in a drawer, not on any holder. If they're out and accessible, my family grabs them before they grab a cloth and I'm trying to discourage that.

I'm trying to use more cloth, so I have a few towels hanging on my range handle, which is behind me as I use the sink. I use them for drying dishes and drying hands. The paper towel roll sits on the main counter next to the fridge and on top of the undercounter microwave. Most of my paper towel use is wiping down condensation from fridge items, or microwaving (covering bowls that might splatter, holding a frozen english muffin while it defrosts, etc). The cloths do everything else.

I am like you, I don't use many and I use the selectable small size, but they do have a purpose.

On your other post there was an image of a holder built into the island. That's what I would do.
