Barb, do you mean a hat sort of like a Santa hat? There are lots of free patterns on the web for something like that. And there are some that don't come to a point, but do hang down the back. Ravelry is a good place to start, but here are some links to free patterns:

Thanks loads for the help. I don't think the Santa hat would fit the bill. She is just out of college. Ready to teach but has decided she doesn't want to the way the kids are nowadays, so is going back to school and getting into the medical field. That seems to be where all of the jobs are. Anyway, I saw a girl with one the other day and slouchy hat fills the bill. I already belong to Ravelry although I seldom visit the site but will dig out the password and see if I can connect. Barb

Barb, a few of the links I posted were for slouchy hats as well. If you don't want to go to revelry, try knittingpatterncentral.com and click on the free pattern directory. Everything is categorized and I'm sure a lot of the patterns at revelry are also posted/linked there.

Never found a pattern for the slouchy hat. I just don't seem to be able to get these free patterns. Yes, I already belong to Ravelry but just can't complete the process. Must be me. Barb
