I bought 2 plants at my nursery this year and yes, they took off! Better planning for next year, though. I sorta abandoned my garden when it really needed me. Lots of life happening. Can't wait until next year, though. I love green sauce! Try this recipe:

Green Avocado Salsa

1/4 tsp. black pepper

3/4 C. chopped yellow onion

3 cloves garlic, minced

4 medium fresh jalapenos, finely minced

1 C. fresh chopped cilantro

1/2 lb. tomatillos, husked & chopped

1 avocado, peeled, pitted & lightly mashed

Salt, to taste

Place all ingredients, except avocado, in a blender or food processor. Pulse to desired consistency. Stir in mashed avocado. Serve with corn chips. Easily doubled.

The years i do not grow tomatillos, I use green tomatoes. I grill them whole until soft, then put them in the blender with a touch of vinegar. From there I make whatever sauce or salsa I feel like. It is a wonderful substitute if you are out of room to plant tomatillos.

I want to grow them too. I can't grow tomatoes...but thug plants I can usually do :)

I plant them in a remote corner of the garden alongside the fence and far from a proper pathway because of their tendency to grow about as wide as they are tall. I cage them in 6' tall tomato cages spaced about 4-5' apart.

The flavor varies a bit from one variety to another but most of the purple ones do have a slightly sweeter flavor than the green ones. All tomatillos are tart to some degree, but some are more tart than others so sometimes you just have to experiment to find the varieties your taste buds like the best.

I've grow Toma Verde several times and it has done well for me, but I also like Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomatillo (not to be confused with Dr. Wyche's Yellow Tomato). S.E.S.E. has a nice selection of varieties that perform well in the southern US.
