Dog bed recommendation please?

We have a new pooch. He is five. Doberman, lab mix. He is BIG and is a gentle giant. I need to get him a bed with a washable cover. I want a good bed that will hold up well. My little pooch just sits on the couch with me, so no experience with dog beds.

please recommend.

My 9yo lab hated her bed for years. We just replaced it with a memory foam one from LLBean. It comes with a washable cotton cover. She loves it.

Kirkland beds from Costco are very good and priced reasonably. Stores like Home Goods carry many different brands of beds at a discount.

I recommend, for your young dog, something reasonably priced, with a washable cover, and decent thickness for support.

Beds need to be replaced when they get worn, so I don't spend a lot of money on them. However, I do replace them with fresh beds and give the used ones to local shelters and rescue organizations.

    What a cute picture!!

I will look at the LL Bean beds.

mimi..the little guy is hardly ever on the floor, so he doesn't really need a bed. He sleeps with my son. But the big guy sleeps on the floor and would like to get into the bed or onto the furniture. Today is an exception. They are both enjoying the sun!

Jmck... Do recall which size you ordered for your lab? Large or extra large?

    is this the one?

I also had large dogs-- one was over 100lb. I had no luck with the less expensive (and much cuter) dog beds from Home Goods, TJMaxx and Costco.. they just didnt last.

The best dog beds I had were from Orvis. My dogs didn't like the ones with bolsters and such. In fact, the both loved what I think is the cheapest .. the nest. The colors/patterns are limited but they last forever-- and the cover is removable/washable. When it gets too worn, you can just buy a new cover. LLBean carries something similar but I didnt like their fabric as much.

One of my dogs liked the fleece covers but I will never get one again-- it got matted and gross and held onto the dog hair. Since one of my dogs had black fur, it looked gross and dirty as soon as I cleaned it.

FWIW I had the XL Orvis round beds for a 75 lb golden retriever/lab mix and a 115 lb rottweiler/mastiff mix.

Yeah, the fleece really holds the hair!

I found my dogs would didn't have a preference amongst our many beds around the house.

The orthopedic bed from Costco is a winner, forgot to add. We found it in the store, but now it's only online (and about twice as much!).

I think the type of bed you get also depends on whether your dog is a "sprawler" or a "cuddler." Lol! We have a 20 lb ball of fluff/stuffed animal-type dog...he sleeps twisted in a tight ball and loves a soft bolster to cuddle against! But many dogs love to sleep all splayed out...they don't need the bolsters.

    And because I couldn't resist...

Funky..the Nest bed...do you have a recommendation on "the fill"?

mimi...no fleece. This dog is hairy.

nini. Your fur ball is cute. Definitely furry.

I wish we had a SAMs closer. It's probably cheap too. Your pooch looks pretty happy in his SAMs club bed.

    ILoveRed,

I got the size large. My dog is 85 pounds and it fits her just perfectly. I also splurged on a fur cover from Pottery Barn because she is always sneaking up on my PB fur throw. I had a credit and I didn't need anything else for the house, so my dog is living like a princess.

Red, I had to go check to be sure-- I had the polyester and cedar fill. Also see that they have many more covers now. Love the National Parks series!

We use the LL Bean premium. It is hot and humid here and I was worried that the therapeutic might be too hot. We have had it for three years and wash the cover once a week and it looks like new. I wanted something that would fit easily in the washer.

Seems like the preferences for each dog are all over the map! The bolster works for our dog because Labs have a habit of leaning on things. Even when she lays down on the rug, she's got her back up against the sofa or a chair.

Maybe before investing in something, you should first watch your dog for a couple of weeks to get a feel of what his habit's are. If he sprawls he would probably prefer a pad of some sort, if he curls up maybe something like the one we got from Costco would be more ideal. If he sleeps against furniture or out in the middle of the floor will tell you know what kind of backing to get, if any at all. Knowing his habits will surely help you figure out what he'd be most comfortable with.

Orvis, best beds ever. Washed many times over 15 years and still going strong and looking good. No idea if they are still as good. They are still pricey.

I bought this for my Rottie, he loves it. I'm pretty sure I will never have to buy another as it's very well made. When my Maltese was alive she used to pee on the Rottweiler's bed so I needed something waterproof and something that was good for the Rotties arthritic hips. I like that the cover is a tic easier to get back on the high density memory foam bed with the (also removable ) heavy plastic zippered lining.I also like that wet dog stink doesn't go right into the dog bed as the top portion is waterproof. http://simdogbed.com/product4.html

Hi Holly-Kay, no he isn't a Havanese (sp?) He is a Cavachon (half Bichon, half King Charles Cavalier) basically a glorified mutt, lol! I have had several people ask if he was a Hav before, so he must really look like one! :) We love him to pieces...he thinks he's people!

Mimipadv....totally cracking up on your "modesty" Photoshop for your sweet pooch! Bet he'd appreciate your consideration if he knew! :)

He's only 13 lbs. and will sleep anywhere, but our Bingo does love his bed from Bean's, especially when the fireplace is on.

Should be specific: Orvis, the beds with the bead filler. Btw, Orvis dog beds are on sale right now.

Over the years, we have owned 3 Bernese Mountain dogs and now have a Leonberger. These are big dogs, and I can say, without any hesitation, that of all the numerous beds we have purchased, this bed from Fosters & Smith

    http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=20937&prodid=42174&catid=2179

is the best. Our Leo absolutely loves his bed and being the couch potato that he is, he spends hours a day in it. We actually purchased a second one to have in our bedroom after seeing how much he loved the one downstairs. The covers are removable, and I have washed ours many times without problems.

also love llbean beds! the extra large is huge! (we have one from when we had a newf!) the large is the right size for your dog if you end up buying llbean...

Very busy Halloween weekend. Sorry it took so long to check back here. Thank you all for pictures of your cute pooches and the recommendations! I am going to look at them today and get one ordered.

Busybee...he is the size of a Doberman. If I get the LLBean...do you think the large is plenty big? TY.

BF1324...a question re: Dr.FosterSmith bed bolsters. Are they washable? TY.

Yes, the bed covers are washable. There are two parts to the beds (the main bed, including the bolster and a separate plush cushion) so there are two covers which can be removed and washed. I have washed mine several times with great success.

yes, I do! we currently have german shepherds and a lab mix- wt range from 65-80lbs and the large is the correct size- being plenty big enough! our newfie was about 135 at her heaviest and the xl was fine, but it is really large- even she laid happily on the large size beds we had too! 2 of our current dogs sometimes 'share' the xl bed... we have 4 beds scattered!

your lab/dobe mix looks like she would be fine with a large... how heavy is she??

Busy bee...we haven't had him very long and I don't know how much he weighs. We haven't had to take him to the vet yet. He belonged/belongs to my niece. She is a critical care vet and couldn't keep him, so we are fostering him. We are so in love with him that we are hoping that when she finally gets a house again, that she won't take him back. She had him since he was a pup and he went to the hospital with her every day. Anyway, when we got him he was caught up on everything. I'm guessing maybe 70 lbs????

The Surgeon who did my TKR 9/2014, has a big "Berner". Gorgeous big dog!!
