Navy walls????

Hi all!

So I closed on my new house, and my next step is to give it a good cleaning and some color. The sellers painted every room a very icky brown. I guess it was their idea of neutral. Anywho...for the master bedroom I wanted to do a dark color. I work nights and just seem to sleep better in a dark colored room...and SO is not keen on purple or red. He caved in and painted the kitchen pink for me, so i wanted to do the master bedroom in something he would like. However, he is that most infuriating of men. The kind that has NO opinion on such matters until after its already painted. So im on my own. His favorite color is blue, so I was thinking navy. The floor and ceiling are a medium dark brazilian hardwood, and the crown molding and baseboards match. What is driving me crazy and what I need advice on is the bedding and curtain colors. I don't think I want it to match the walls exactly, and also don't want it to be starkly different. For the bed I was looking at a lighter blue set,but don't know if that would work. I want it to have a mix of masculine and feminine l. I have no idea for the curtains. Should they be blue to match the comforter that Im not sure will work with navy?tan?grey? Should they be brown to match the wood? I try to watch these design shows and never see anything that I would want in my house. I don't like modern design. (Or should I say "contemporary") I like things cozy and romantic and feminine. But please help me find a balance. Any advice will be appreciated.

If you're going to do a dark color, I would absolutely paint the trim and moulding a soft white or off white.

    Here are some ideas....

In flipping through the navy rooms on houzz, I see a lot just have navy as an accent wall and not the whole room.

As far as masculine vs feminine, it has to do with patterns and shapes. I find this room more feminine with the delicacy of the coral, the floral bedspread and the rounded shape of the headboard.

I think the room looks sharp with the white trim to offset the dark navy...

    Browndale Avenue · More Info

...but I really like the warmth of this one with the warmer beige tones and rust and gold with the grayed down navy.

I'm not normally a fan of sparse spaces, but this one, with the soft gray looks very inviting to me.

Hopefully these will give you some ideas of what to do with navy walls.

I think navy walls would be fine, I would probably do drapery that was white or very pale gray.

My bedroom is navy and we used toile as an accent. Maybe too feminine for you?

Another direction you might consider would be grey walls with navy bedding.

I painted our den (office/library) navy - it has antique white wainscoting and trim, med cherry hardwood floors, an oriental style rug, and I went with gold/bronze panels which look nice- you don't have to go bright white with navy!! :)

I like Fun's suggestion to do grey walls. It'll give you more options to accessorize.

I am seeing a trend in those photos of navy and white. But if you're not into the whole blue-white scheme, I would consider a bright green, orange, or red for your bedding. I would try to bring *some* white into the room in the form of art, window treatments, lamps, etc. I don't know if I'd paint the trim, either.

I did my living room below the chair rail this past spring in Ben Moore Andes Summit. Not my room, obviously, but here it is. It's got some gray in it.

In our previous home I had a blue accent wall. This is a realtors photo from when we listed so it's a bit distorted.

I have a guest room in a very dark blue. Even the trim and doors. I like it, yet it is never bright in that room. If you go dark consider having a white ceiling. I don't regret my blue ceiling but I also never do anything like thread a needle in there.

It has often been suggested on this forum to choose your rug first. Are you certain you will use the current bedding?

Thanks everyone for the inspiration. Emmarene, I don't have any bedding yet. That's what I was stumped on,The bedding colors and the curtains. As far as the ceiling, I just don't think I could bring myself to paint the beautiful wood white. The floor and the ceiling have the same brazilian hardwood and it was a huge plus for me. I don't want to paint the crown molding or baseboards either. They are brand new and so pretty! I suppose I should be thinking about a rug to go under the bed as well....good grief.

You have many options for bedding and curtains. You said you like cozy and romantic so I think if you look at patterns that give you that feeling-- maybe like BeaglesDIB suggested-- toile-- a mix of toile and stripes, just stripes, or a floral with blue, etc. it will make it easier to pick the wall color. It won't be stark, especially if you have fun mixing the patterns. You can also use a color like coral or pink to give you a softer touch, as well as faded blues and faded reds (take a look at antique French fabrics for inspiration).

Yes the dark wood, it slipped my mind. Thinking of it makes me think you may not stick with navy. Anele gave you some good advice so I will not repeat the same sentiments. Only you can judge how feminine your husband can tolerate. I did see a blue toile at Country Curtains.

    Sheepskin

    Faux fur

    or an oriental rug

    bling

    White textiles

Or a canopy bed or just canopy

You will see more navy walls with white trim, but you can use blue on the walls as long as you pick the color to give enough contrast with the wood. Going into the grey/blue family might be worth looking at.

White is a classic bedding choice, but it can tend towards more feminine. I would also look at grey and keep textural details in mind -- or look at natural linens and cottons with navy and do blues and browns. Brass accents would go well.

Grey blue is a great wall color, I have it in my kitchen, love it. Your SO sounds exactly like mine. No opinion, "Whatever you want" he says, and then afterwards, blames me if it doesn't go well because it was "my idea." I can't hardly even FORCE him to make a decision, he always circles back to me, "What do you want?" Arghhhh! I can't figure out how to compromise if he never expresses his tastes or desires. Then he says, "Well it depends . . . Sometimes I like this, but other times I like that, it depends . . . " One thing I can say is his favorite colors sound like your SO's. He likes navy, royal blue, red (like barn red, cranberry or burgundy or cherry red) and grey and taupe and maybe khaki and beige/camel. Those all look great with navy!
