Need suggestions on replacing ugly light fixture

We could use some suggestions on replacing ugly fluorescent light fixture in kitchen area of open concept floor plan. It can be seen from living & dining areas also. The new light/lights cannot hang too low as this house also does not have the 10' ceilings we are use to. Any ideas?
