Help! Bed side built-in problem

I ordered 2 custom made unfinished wood nightstands. They were supposed to be 36" wide. After painting them, I discovered that they are actually 38" wide. This is the stores fault, not mine. I have the email trail where I sent a correction to the original quote which had the wrong measurements on it.

I have a carpenter on site who says he can shave an inch off the top of each nightstand so they will fit flush with the wall. This will still only leave 62 inches between the stands (we are getting a queen size mattress which is 60").

Do you think this will work. I can put up with a bit of inconvenience changing sheets, etc. as long as it looks okay.

The furniture store will likely make it right and get me new ones, but by the time they arrive the carpenter will be long gone (we are turning the nightstands into built-ins on either side of the bed) and I'll have to try to build the shelves myself. I'll also have to repaint the new ones.

Golly, I am severely pissed about this.

Any thoughts on what I should do, or other brilliant solutions?

I would not want an overhanging top with a crevice below on the wall side, regardless so it's I'd want the top trimmed flush on the left on the above table and the right on the othern

Palimpsest, that is the plan, but do you think having only an inch clearance on either side of the bed will be enough?

If your bedding is more than 1" thick then I think it would be a problem. If you don't use a thick duvet, etc., it might be fine. Or you might curse it always and hate having your bedding squished in there. How much to have the carpenter come back to fix new ones?

Oh, what a bummer, but I think it will probably work. They will just look built- in rather than free-standing. What style & height will the bed be?

Are you going to be cursing the nightstands when you squish your fingers while tucking the bedding in? Is the bed the same height as the nightstands or is there a height difference? That might make it easier to make

I'm sorry you're dealing with this frustration! I don't know if it will work, but do you think it will forever bug you when you look at it? Just be sure you won't regret it later. Do they know they messed up yet? When you leave them know I'd mention the other inconvenience it's creating with the scheduling.

would the extra 2" make that much difference?

Just finished going over dimensions, etc. with my DH and I'm still not sure if it will bug me or not.

The mattress will be much lower than the top of the nightstand.

Sheelsback, They do know at the shop and the owner says that they will make it right if it was their fault (which it is).

jlc, we haven't bought the bed yet, so it can pretty much be whatever will fit (but we really couldn't do smaller than a queen). And I really want it to look built in, so that is good that you think it will.

Olychic, I don't think I could get this particular carpenter back at all (and he is really amazing). Because it is an insurance claim, I can get him to do it on the side while all his equipment is here, etc. for much less cost than if I hired someone to come in and do it separately. Also, I am so charming that he is willing to do it as a favour (that and the fact that when I described to him how I was going to do it myself, he almost passed out).

I think I will probably keep them and hope for the best. But I'm not going to decide tonight.

The top of your hands will be constantly bruised from trying to make a bed with too little room.

put furniture sliders under the bed so it's easier to pull out to make it

were they supposed to be 36" with the overhang and the carpenter was to shave an inch off each side to make them 34"? can he cut the legs narrower?? ... I am guessing you will have baseboard molding in front of the cabinets if they're going to look builtin.

I definitely would want something that wasn't too difficult to work around... if you think any aspect of the cabinet will be annoying a regular basis and the current cabinet can't be modified, I would change it even if it does mean repainting and calling the carpenter back at a later time...

Try lying on the bed with the nightstand tight up against it. I keep mine a few inches from the bed b/c I can't stand to have it in my face. I'm also afraid of hitting my head or my hands on it in my sleep.

Are you sure you'll always want a queen size bed? If you ever wanted to go up to king you'd have to tear them out.

If your current/favorite carpenter absolutely cannot return to finish the install, plead with him for the name of someone he would entrust with the job. You likely will not be happy with the alteration described no matter how much less it would cost you to get the job done gratis.
