Why thank you groveraxle. I am a pretend artist myself. This trick does not work with older kids. But young kids do some amazing work. As they get older they try to make it look like something instead of allowing creativity be their guide.

That mantlepiece looks quite high? Wouldn't normally recommend hanging artworks so that their top edge is any higher than the top of the windows... you may be able to push that a bit, but you'll need width rather than height in your artwork. We have a range of signarture abstract canvases in that format that will pick up on the brown tones of your room but can also bring in an accent colour of your choice:

Please post pics of the rest of your house to give us an idea of style and colors. If you are starting with this area, you could really go with any art piece. Also, just a suggestion, I would add a little thickness to your mantel if possible to give it more oomph.
