knobs vs pulls

I have a lot of tall cabinets and someone mentioned that the vertical pulls may accentuate that. I was thinking of doing squarinsh knobs on cabinets and pulls on drawers, but now it am afraid that knobs may look too small. What do you think?

I don't have a problem with accentuating the tallness of the cabinets (says the person who used 9" pulls on all of my 55" stacked cabs). I much prefer pulls to knobs.

Can't wait to see your reveal! Beautiful!

Re squarish knobs -- would it bother you when they go out of alignment? Are you the kind of person who would feel compelled to go around straightening them?

the have teeth on the back so maybe they shouldn't get misaligned. I am just worried that they look tiny and actually make my cabinets look even taller and bigger.

My husband and I are disagreeing about knobs versus pulls right now. He is firmly in the all-pulls camp. I'm really liking a mix like in the picture below; knobs on doors and top drawers with pulls on lower drawers. He argues for function (it's easier for him to use pulls.) I like the look of the mix and I think it's easier to swap out knobs when I (inevitably) need a change.

I don't like the look of knobs on tall doors -- they look like an afterthought or mistake. Plus, I like the function of pulls better for my aging hands, and they are a bigger target when reaching to open a door or drawer.

Your kitchen is going to be so pretty!

I used a combination of vertical pulls & square knobs. Longer pulls on the taller cabinets seemed more proportional to me.

I've used my kitchen for nearly a year & never had an issue with the square knobs turning out of alignment.

Square knobs have teeth nowadays and don't budge, but that comes up in every post about them.

If find fewer finger prints (and associated peanut butter, etc) ends up on the doors when pulls are used. YMMV

I like the pulls. Being larger, they're more proportional; being rectangular, they echo the shape of the cabinet. Definitely the pulls.

I have birdcage knobs with just ONE screw in the middle on some of my cabinets, and they do "spin". Not the end of the world, but annoying.

Finally, the pulls just work better. Since we're planning a house for our retirement years, I went to Lowes and opened lots of drawers /cabinets while pretending I was an elderly person who didn't have easy movement in my fingers. The larger pulls were easier to pull open. The little knobs were the hardest.

The alignment issue will drive me insane. Will the teeth help? I was just in a store and the knob is turning everywhich way. I am leaning towards all pulls. Frankly I have no more desire to start looking from scratch. Will the 5" pull shown in the picture work or should I go 3.5"? I would think 5" is good, that's the one in the picture. On larger drawers 27 and 30 I will use 7". Where should the pull be placed on the drawer in relation to the shaker frame? Middle or closer to the top? Thank you all for your kind words. I can't wait to post my finished kitchen pictures. For now it's just a big mess and a lot of heartache.

There are probably almost as many people posting here as there are opinions on where to put the pulls. Look around on Houzz at different kitchen photos to get a sense of what looks "right" to your eye. Here's what I did:

That's interesting about the teeth, I would have liked to have seen knobs like that when we were doing updates to sell the house last year. We had oval ones that always were askew -- I didn't notice or care but my mom seemed to always be fiddling with them. When I changed them to glass hex knobs she was on my case that I did not line those up perfectly either.

amck, I like your hardware selections but I am smitten by your stool :-)

Re: spinning knobs, Loctite makes a product that is supposed to keep screws from loosening up, yet the screw can be unscrewed (removed) if/when desired. I vaguely recall being told to get the "blue tube or bottle" but I'm not sure.

How tall are your upper cabinets? As far as placement, you could do two 5" pulls on your drawer stacks that are 30", like amck2 did in her pic above. Notice her smaller drawers have one pull. As Carrie B suggested, look at kitchen pics to see what you like. What looks "right" to me is all 5" pulls, positioned in the middle of the drawer frame with two 5" pulls on 30" or larger drawers. I did knobs on my 45" upper cabinets. I did 5" pulls on my larger upper & lower pantry cabinets. That's me, but that may not be you.

edit: love, love love your backsplash!

42". I am not crazy about two pulls on drawers, I feel that I would still be only grabbing one to open it, so I think I will do the 7". The pulls I chose are pretty wide, so going bigger would look too big. thank you for the compliments on backsplash and everything else, it means the world to me : )

Avoid 7" pulls (centers) if at all possible.

I just replaced my kitchen hardware in preparation to sell. I had many 7" center pulls. Very few choices were available and I ended up choosing something I really didn't like that much because there was such a limited choice. You may think you will never want to replace your hardware....but time flies.

    your kitchen looks great, btw.

We went the all pulls route...horizontal on drawers, vertical on doors...so I would go all pulls.

5" is fine, looks good with most widths of drawers and cabinets. I always felt 3.5" were awkward, too small for grasping comfortably but might be necessary on very narrow drawers. If you can use a wider pull on larger drawers (I didn't because the larger size was so much more expensive), I would do that instead of 2 smaller -- buy one or two extra if it is an odd width in case you need to replace?

Placement really is to individual taste. I put all of mine on the top frame (of the shaker drawers) and vertical on the side of doors. Not all drawer construction can take a screw evenly through the top frame, though, look at the backside of your drawers to see. I also like pulls placed just a bit under the top frame, and the same on all drawers. I don't care for having the pulls centered in the center panel so much, especially when drawers are different sizes.

Pulls are easier on the hands, and you can open a cabinet or drawer with your one unsticky finger. Avoid pulls that protrude beyond their mounting screws; they are pocket rippers. (Are there cabinet pulls that attract male hands away from the cabinet surfaces?)

So - I was at a granite place today and there were these cabinet displays... I kid you not, I could not stop myself when I was faced with caddywhampus square knobs.

We got all pills in various lengths. Just 1 long one for drawers as I knew we wouldn't use 2.

If I had to do it over I would probably have used the middle size instead of the long ones on my tall cab doors. But whatever, it's done and I do love the pulls! I think I also had the same thread last year re: pulls and knobs and sizes.

I'm a knob person. Mine look like the ones in benjesbride's pic with glass knobs and bin pulls for the drawers. I can appreciate that pulls would be easier to use though (and maybe my DH's grubby hands wouldn't make the cabs so dirty all of the time? I just don't know how he does it!).
