Drawer Length Question

I've often read here about getting extra-long drawer boxes in order to use the full cab depth, rather than the standard 21" box, even if they're not full-extenion at the longer length. In talking with the cabinetmaker (via GC), however, the glides have a tab that attaches to the back of the box, so how does one get deeper boxes if the glides are 21" and attach to the back of the box? To use 24" glides for pantry shelves (full overlay cabinets), he says that the cabinet will have to be 27 inches deep. Is there hardware of some sort that eats up the additional space?

On the bright side, I did get height and width measurements for the insides of the proposed drawers, so I've hours of entertainment ahead in figuring out what goes where and whether I should modify the configuration. TKO Saturday.
