I have heard that slant fencing works really well but haven't tried it myself because I need the more solid woven wire fencing that also keeps out small animals (fox, bobcat, skunks, armadillos, coons, possums, etc.). I recommended it to the one neighbor we have who sits directly between us and the Red River, because deer demolish his garden every year, but he didn't want to bother with it.

All that has worked for me is a fence. Period. Anything else like repellents and such are only sporadically effective.

I have a neighbor who keeps them out of his fruit trees by playing a radio, which he keeps in a ziplock bag to protect it from the elements, and it is plugged in to an outlet in his barn, which is much closer to the garden than the house is. The bagged radio sits right in the tree and he leaves it on day and night on a talk radio station. However, even though his fruit trees are directly adjacent to the fenced veggie garden (4' tall fence), the deer still jump the fence into the garden even though they steer clear of his apple trees.

Some people have success with the Scarecrow sprinkler, though of course you'd need a water source to make it work, and I don't know that it would be effective 100% of the time.

For many years I had success with two short fences, each one 3' tall and sitting 3' or 4' apart. It was like a moat (without water) around the garden. Deer can jump high or they can jump wide but they cannot jump high and wide at the same time (sort of confuses them in the same way the slanted fence does). Eventually, though, one smart deer figured out how to jump sideways over the first fence, landing in between Fence 1 and Fence 2. Then he jumped over Fence 2 and ate freely in the garden. Once he did it, others learned from him. When that stopped working, we put up the 8' tall woven wire fence, which wouldn't be economically feasible with fields the size of yours.

Finally, other than the 8' fence, nothing works as well in drought years or in the dead of winter when deer are very hungry. The more hungry and more desperate they arel, the harder they work to get into a fenced garden. Back in 2011, one local guy found two starving deer trapped inside a hog trap. They must have gotten down on their knees to crawl into it, and once they were in, they were trapped. It was hard to imagine they were desperate enough to get into that hog trap, but it was baited and they were hungry. As soon as he found them, he fed them and released them, of course.

I tried to lure deer away from eating our plants around the house by planting a plot of deer food for them, using one of those deer plot seed mixes sold in autumn. I planted if for them out behind the barn close to the compost pile (which they raid nightly) so they'd have food to eat in the autumn/winter of 2011-2012. I watered it a lot and it sprouted and grew, and they wouldn't touch it! Talk about being aggravated with them....I was! The rabbits loved it though, and the clover comes back every year, so the rabbits eat it still.
