i dont have open plan, but my white cabinets (sea pearl) dont match the extensive kitchen trim (white dove) and it doesnt bother me. i think it would be a problem only if you wanted a continuous crown molding around the rooms that continues across the cabinet tops, so settle that issue first.

thank you and yes the crown molding that continues into other rooms is a beautiful feature that my builders use . I've seen it in all the same color. Perhaps if give my cabinets some color and create a contrast....
