Small A/V Collection

Hi! Just wanted to share my A/V collection and to show everyone their growing conditions....They get plenty of light and warmth from the windowsill spot.

Here's a closer pic of the ones at the very end....
Thanks again for letting me share my AVs. -Melanie

Update: They're still blooming! I hope they do well on the windowsill during the coming winter. Tonight I have them in the kitchen. They were watered and checked. They're doing fine. Thanks for letting me share. -Melanie

    Melanie -

for the windowsill grower - you do amazingly well. Everything is growing and blooming. I would say the pink variegated one and the purple - need separating and repotting - seems that you have more than one crown or more than one plant living together - but this is a picky attitude of somebody who wants all of them to be grown to Show ;-)).

We do not know what zone you are or what part of the country - so hard to say how cold your windowsill is going to be in midwinter. Cold and wet is dangerous for the roots - so if it is going to be on a chilly side for them - be stingy on watering. If the chill is not a big issue - you will have less blossoms in winter - because they won't get as much light as in summer months - but otherwise they should be just right.

At night when the heat is off might be too cold by drafty glass windows. Joanne

Thanks Irina! I live in New York. Last winter we had single digits with windchills in the negative digits. Any advice on artificial lighting for January through March would be very helpful. Last winter I had them under a regular lightbulb in the kitchen. They were very light deprived... I've come to learn that's why there so neckie and overgrown with crowns. I need to do a major separation job for them. Thanks again for the great input! I'm elated with my AVs! Melanie

Melanie - I would think that keeping the curtains open and putting a slice of styrofoam under the pots will mitigate the cold to some extent. Regarding the lights - you can get an over the counter single 24" T5 light strip from WM - and hang it 15" above the plants. This way you will give them an extra light. You do not need to keep it on all the time - may be for 3 hours in the evening.

Thanks Irina! I've been thinking about getting a proper light for them but wasn't sure what to get. This helps so much! I will shop for something as soon as I'm able too. Right now the outside temp is in the upper 30s. In another month we might be seeing night time temps in the low 20's or upper teens. I need to get moving on my A/V light setup! Thanks again! -Melanie

Actually I was also thinking I'd like to set up a small greenhouse situation by the windowsill for them. Any ideas on how I might be able to achieve this would be great. Even during the winter it's very sunny so a Minnie greenhouse could work. -Melanie

Here are my AVs...they're still doing great on the windowsill. I made sure to winterize the window (no drafts). So far so good! I'm happy they're still blooming. However there was a catastrophe with the cat that I won't get into.... :\ I hope things keep going well with these AVs. I've had them for almost two years now!
