Great to "see" you back harryshoe! Don't know which ones you have had trouble with but tops on my fern list are Adiantum pedatum, Osmunda regalis and Osmunda cinnamomea.

Matteuchia struthiopteris is lovely but won't play nice as it will spread and they are huge. I really like the Japanese Painted Ferns too.

I've never been away. Until I get my pictures reorganized, I won't have much to post. Do you have the common names for those suggestions? Sorry. I'm a fern novice.

I also have one which might be a Wood Fern which was transplanted from a very crowded, shady spot in early September. In its brighter, open new home, it rebounded vigorously with new growth until an October frost slowed it down. It still looks good in late November..

Sure, no problem. In the original order I gave them Maidenhair fern, Royal fern and Cinnamon fern. Then the one that spreads is the Ostrich fern.

A great way to maneuver here is to highlight the name of the plant given by holding down on your mouse on the left click until the name is highlighted then let go of the mouse - then right click with your mouse. A box with options will show up. Select "search google for (let's use the example) Adiantum pedatum". Click on that and it will take you directly to that search. Try it - it is such a time saver.

I usually give the Latin name to avoid confusion with common names.

See if you can find Athyrium filix-femina 'Dre's Dagger'. It is a trouble free lady fern that I've basically ignored and does well here. It has great texture and if you can view it from above, all the better.
