I use a rechargable battery reciprocating saw for such purposes. I hated them at first due to their vibrations but I have finally got the hang of it and I find it priceless for this exact purpose. Cuts through a thick cane in a second if it is green or takes a bit longer if it is woody. Any such saw will do as long as it is compact, no need to get one of the 'special' garden saws, as long as one fits it with a blade for wood.

I have an old version of this Corona saw which I purchased years ago at Home Depot or Lowes. The blade is nicely narrow for tight spots, but it is also shorter, which might be an issue for reaching into the center of plants with many canes. Corona 6 1/2 inch Root & All Purpose Saw

I also use a battery operated resiprecating saw with a wood blade. Does a neat job and gets right down to the base of the old cane. With the amount of roses I have, I would spend a lot of time on my knees carefully cutting out the old canes to the base. Loppers are totally useless as they usually damage the canes when you have to open them wide.

Melissa, I'm a little late, but try googling "bonsai keyhole saw". I inherited one, not knowing for years what to call it. It works wonders.

Silky Gomtaro...or any Silky blade really. I am old school, avoiding the ferocious chainsaw (true, it is a 70cc beast), much preferring the satisfying slither of a razor sharp Japanese steel blade through bark, pith and gnarled roots.

Again, thanks for the suggestions. I like manual tools, it's true. Perhaps this year I'll give myself an extra Christmas present. The garden itself is my main gift.
