Rescue Plants

last modified: 10 years ago

These plants are in bad condition. I trimmed the worst of the rot and wilt but I still have to repot. These are the only ones that still have blossoms. Not the best photos or plants but promising. I have set leaves. The photo smeared on the two tone red but it had the most beautiful colors.

I think you will be able to revive them.

If you remove ALL the blossoms and all the leaf and bloomstalk stubs - you will give the plants a better chance - they will spend energy on healing only and they wouldn't have any damaged tissue left to catch rot.

    I like the pink one.

    I.

You've got a lot of life there ...

Unless there is an underlying problem, they will recover.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

Irina I took the photos quick, after I cleaned the rot and wilt. After I took the photos, I trimmed the leaf nubs and cut off the blossom stalks. I brushed the leaves and placed in a sealed plastic bag. I am not keeping them sealed as it is too wet. I did repot some but not all. There are 8 plants.

I suspect I have duplicates but that is fine. Those are the 3 with flowers but from the look of the debris, I think there is a very dark blue double, possibly with white edge and one variegated, so 5 distinct plants, maybe more. However, I think that lovely pink is duplicated which is nice.

Aegis The crowns are in very good shape once I cleaned the blossom litter, carefully, of course. I suspected either rot or bugs on one plant but the crown was clean and healthy when I finally cleaned it off. No bugs in the soil, no bugs in the crown, or none that I see so I am pleased with my rescue. I really like Noids and I have 5 which are surprise packages if they live long enough to bloom. I am surprised the crowns and roots were in such good shape considering the wilt and rot in the outer lower leaves.

Does anyone have any ideas about what the plants may be? ID? Any guesses?

Sorry, Lucky - you want named plants - you buy named plants. You got NOIDs - you live with them. If they have a Holtkamp greenhouses stamp on them - you can be pretty sure they are Optimaras - and you can scout the current list of plants they produce. So - if you rescued them from a big box store - they should have stickers. If you got them from some other place and they do not have anything attached to the pots - love them as they are.

We had our Fall Show and Sale in a pretty little nursery. People there treated us very nicely. They had some pretty decent AVs for sale and the owner told us that she purchases them from a nice lady who grows them to full size and sells them to her. They all were named and well grown - and they all were named incorrectly. We checked them all - and nowdays - with ipads, tablets, smartphones - there is no problem to get to the First Class descriptions - none of them fit.

So - if you get the named plant from a reputable seller - you can be 95% sure that you get it right. There is still 5% error - because you can get the wrong plant or it can sport on you. Guessing which one of 20000 registered or unregistered named AVs you got...

Yes, I have mostly named plants now but I couldn't pass up these noids :)

I gave them names "Tu Dor" "Tu Tone" Tu Too" Tu Far" Tu Shall" Tu Sea" "Tu Dark" "Tu Bleu."

Tu Sea is the double blue in the first photo. It was Tu Bleu but I used that for a different one. You know, I had a leaf that was labeled Millennia. It bloomed, huge pink white edged blossoms. I named it "Best Guess." Then everyone said "Maggie Lee, including the person who sent it. I was kinda sad to lose my whimsical name "Best Guess." I suppose I will have to hybridize so I can name plants and make it stick.

I didn't photograph Tu Dor but I think, from the debris, it is a very vivid Rose Red, so "Tu Dor Rose." I have another "Rose" and I search the data base with "Rose" for that one so I skipped the Rose. It is just Tu Dor

If your middle plant photo is Optimara,,,,,it very well may be Optimara Michele. She is pink with a raspberry edge. Look her up on their site,,,you will see it! Rosie

    Rosie

Thanks. I considered Michelle but I think Michelle is single. This pink is double. I suspect that first one, the double blue, is a Russian. The pots are not Optimara and some of the plants are variegated. The picture I am posting has Tommie Lou variegation and pale blue semi-double blossoms. That is very unusual, that pale blue with variegation.

You're right,,,Michele is a single, but wow, she sure does resemble O. Michele! I know mine is O. Michele. Only place I got her from was Lowes and that is what they sell.

You have beautiful plants! Good luck! Rosie
