what does that mean....air layer?

Root a cutting while it's still on the tree.

I see...what is the advantage of doing that?

The cutting doesn't loose moisture and die before it roots, it continues to grow while rooting, the risk of rot does down slightly from the cutting getting a steady supply of nutrients, if the cutting never roots it can stay on the tree.

Not looking too good. I think my water sucks.

I removed my air layer system to change the soil to a less wet mix. It calloused pretty well then I broke the air layer off accidentally when I dropped the pruners I used to cut the zip ties. There was a tiny amount of callous on the end of the cutting so I'm now trying to root it.

Sorry to hear it broke off, callous is definitely progess. Perhaps you could use some rooting hormone on it? Something with 2-5% (2000-5000 ppm) IBA, the 1% doesn't tend to work for my cuttings.

I'm not sure what percentage it was.
