When your SO elects to "help" with your Hoyas...

I found some mealies on a new plant that I purchased, which I treated for in an appropriate manner, but the bf decided that ladybugs would be better(!). So as a "surprise", he just released FIFTEEN HUNDRED ladybugs in a 60 sq ft room. It's a ladybug apocalypse in there, I'm not sure what to do. Anybody have some mealy bugs they don't want?

Maybe you have some reserves hanging out in the walls. Where I live, lady bugs go into the crevices in buildings in the fall and spend the winter in some sort of hibernation or some such state. Then they come pouring out in the spring, often going the wrong way --- into the rooms instead of out to the garden.

I once had a houseguest, in the rarely-used guest room. We turned the heat on in there for the first time in quite a while. The next morning she had quite a tale to tell about the flood of ladybugs that decided come visit her throughout the night. As I recall, she never stayed in our guest room again.

Lol 1500 ought to do the job! How will you collect them? Wish I could keep 20 as pets to use when necessary.

Oh I'm afraid the won't last very long, they're won't be enough food for them and it's too cold to let them outside. It's the one time I wished I had more bad bugs on my plants! I don't like the idea of them perishing...looks like a Ladybug bomb went off in there.

I'm sure he meant well... I've always thought I'd love to have a ladybug brigade to fend off those buggers...

Oh it was all good intentions, honestly it made me giggle (but feel bad for the little guys). Surprisingly, there are still quite a few still buzzing around so who knows? Maybe I'll start a lady bug factory.

I don't have any mealies to speak of, for a change, but I do have some pesky aphids hanging around. Ladybugs eat aphids, too ;).

I am catching up on some posts and this one made me giggle 24 hours later. I can see it now - 1500 ladybugs in a 60 sq foot grow room. Ha

I too thought of releasing Lady Bugs in my sun-room but opted for an anole...Charlie. He lived and loved it here for awhile but then fell victim to my dog, Nico, while attempting to travel across the room on the floor :0( I did not have mealie bugs but fungus gnats. Are they still alive? That's very funny...

Naughty Nico! I'd love to get a lizard for my Hoya room but I don't think the kitties would be too kind.

The last of the lady bugs has just now perished. I'm hoping they laid eggs and more will hatch, because my room is clean as a whistle, not a fungus gnat to be seen.

Haha! Sorry houseguest, that made me laugh. But you're totally right, I did notice a ton of them in the crevices, most of which I couldn't reach with the broom or the vacuum (thankfully, now that you told this story). I hope they come back, they were fun to watch and I like the idea of other living creatures in my Hoya room. :)
