I use all my water change water on my plants. Don't know what the nutrient levels are like, but they seem to like it.

A 40 gallon fish tank would work nicely for a basic indoor aquaponics set up. If you wanted to, you could establish a small grow bed to place on top of your tank that would have plants. In a true aquaponics system, the bacteria make up the biofilter and turn the ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate which the plants can use as fertilizer. You would no longer have to change the water. You can learn more Here

Get some BioChar and put it in your tank. It will filter your water and keep it much cleaner while also building beneficial bacteria that will then power your plants if added to your watering.

You might also consider putting one Pleco Catfish in your tank. That fish will consume a lot of the uneaten food and clean the bottom and sides.
