While it is decorative it's not going to give you good light for preparation work underneath. I think it's out of scale with your ceiling height too. The chain would be too short in proportion with the fixture. Note that most Island fixtures are open at the bottom and direct light downwards. Your lantern is more suited to give general ambient light in a high ceiling area like a staircase or a vaulted ceiling.

Too big and not funtional

I am confused by other designer's comments with regard to light fixtures to "go big or go home." I do believe the lantern is functional as the light bulbs face sideways, and down, as a pendent would be, but it may be a tad big. Thanks for your response.

go big or go home is a great concept with a 10 ft ceiling to avoid the look of a small fixture in a big space. for a traditional lower ceiling such as yours, a large fixture just makes the lower ceiling more noticeable.

in any case, find a box or shopping bag or something the size of the fixture you want and hang it from the ceiling to see what works for you.
