The aquarium is in a window and keeps surrounding areas warmer than the room temperature of about 69 F. The water that I use is straight from this aquarium and has a lot of nitrites.

It sounds like you're doing everything right, particularly the extra humidity over the aquarium and using aquarium water (I've done that, too). However, I think butziis may be simply hard to grow as I had upwards of five (I bought a batch one time) and they all died, just shriveled up, perhaps with some form of mealy bug, while my other plants, treated the same, remained by and large just fine. Indeed, several of my ionanthas are blooming now; I think they generally bloom in winter anyhow (a lot did last winter), as down in Mexico, their ancestral home, there would be hummingbirds to pollenate them. So it may not be anything you are doing, it's just a pretty but temperamental plant.

Winter care, from my experience - there is no wind and not much sun in houses over winter, so any extra humidity can actually kill your plants, especially bulb types and other ones that are sensitive to overwatering. I give my plants regular, but careful watering (more during sunny days and less or none during cloudy days) and then move them to a warm, bright and dry place. The sooner they get dry after watering, the better.

I'm just spraying mine lightly about twice a day, maybe underdoing it, but they don't really look unhappy (we want our pets and plants and babies to be happy, so we tend to overdo things...). I've only bathed everyone (the plants, I mean) about once in the last ten days (well, my Spanish moss 2x, as it does appreciate that). We are usually very dry here in the highlands of central New Mexico, though lately we've been getting stormy weather (2" of snow on Sunday, Dec 13, though most of it melted away that afternoon in bright sunlight), so our humidity is higher than usual -- but it's cold, too, so turning on the heaters will dry the air out a bit. Fortunately, most of these plants do "like" it dry, or at least tolerate it, and they are out in the open. Maybe butziis simply prefer the climate and conditions of where their ancestors were gathered, and I don't know what those would be (somewhere in Mexico and Central America probably).

Oregon had the same snowy conditions on Sunday. There is no sign of snow now.

Thank you all for your help. I have moved it to a less humid place and am making sure that it dries fully. I am leaving my other air plants above my 100 some gallon aquarium. Do you think that a Xenographica, Mudusa Caput will be harmed by the humidity?
