Well, you could try H mutabilis 'Rubrum', it's been hardy for several years in NE Oklahoma and grows and blooms well, so it should certainly do for anywhere in Texas.

Thanks, I think my terms were mixed up. There are several recommended hardy hibiscus for our area. I now assume that any hardy hibiscus is considered "Confederate Rose". Texas A&M has developed several single petaled ones for our area.

The specific one I've seen in my neighborhood is hardy, and is multi-petaled and pink. It comes up in June and usually blooms in October or so. It seems as if they get killed back by frost just before they come into full bloom (even close to the house on the south side). It's a pass-a-long plant. Everyone I've spoken to who has one just gotten a cutting from someone else.

Yes, that's the std definition of H mutabilis...the old double pink form. That's why I recommended the newer form, if you like the color difference at least. Its' far more vibrant and starts bloom earlier.

I do not confuse confederate rose with std hardy hibiscus (aka H. moschoetos cv and hybrids)...but that's the problem with common names.
