Stones no mortar base?

What is under these stones? Is it just soil? Will the stones eventually crack due to ground settling? I was told that would happen when exploring options if we didn't use a mortar base.

These stones are installed on a compacted gravel base, 4"-6" thick. After the stones were installed, we removed the gravel from the joints allowing enough room for 4" of topsoil. We then installed sod in the joints. The stones will not crack since they are not mortared in place.

Looks great Mark, large stone with a natural random appearance, setem and forgetem technique.
