Not sure what your exposure is there (NSEW?) but I would invest in some low a maintenance shrubbery and perennials to make the area easier to manage. Your house appears somewhat traditional, and you've got a nice seating area in the background. Choose one medium height shrub or compact tree for the central area and build out wards with the shortest, low growing towards the outer edges. Here's a few options in terms of flowering shrubs versus all just greenery. (I always love Japanese maples as they come in so many varieties, colors and sizes - and can suit traditional or contemporary gardens. Ornamental grasses look great as well. Don't rush the process and search zone 7 gardens on Houzz for ideas.
