Sorry, I have never found any squash are resistant to pickle worms. Fortunately here in middle GA, they don't arrive until early July. Once the rind begins to harden, they don't bother the fruit. I can grow acorns, butternuts, cushaws etc by planting in early April. Any tender fruits from July on tho are eaten alive by these things. Not optimum for winter squash as I would much prefer to harvest in October. Havn't figured out a way to do it tho. Common insecticides are pretty useless on them.

FWIW, in the meantime I have learned that Butternut and Hubbard varieties have some resistance. BT offers some help but a nematode called Steinernema is better; applying row covers at night also is recommended, but will not be practical for me. Will try planting early as you do, but more like 4/15 as last frost here is 4/10. I can set out transplants, though.

Farmer dill and I have discussed this pest before, and he's correct. I have had some limited success using a combination of Bt and some type of covering for the fruit, but you have to be diligent and it's not 100%, more like 60-75%. Bought some ladies knee highs and put the fruit in them, then tie it off around the stem, sprayed with neem oil dusted with Dipel (Bt). Worked pretty good, but not 100%. Reapply after rains.

if I can keep my cukes alive through Downey mildew, they will work as a trap crop, but again it's not 100%.

Downey mildew is also a late season problem, but there are resistant varieties, like Seminole. The above pic is of a butternut-seminole f-4 hybrid from Commonwealth seeds. The breeder is a guy named Edmund Frost, who has done a lot of work with DM resistance in cucurbits.

Huge vines, but they were productive late last year.
