compost for plug trays

After a dismal season, I'm picking up the pieces and determined to start fresh. Last year I tried a bag of pro mix that had some sort of water saving crystals in it for my plug trays. If you find a bag of this stuff, run far far away. The water saving crystals made it so water retaining that virtually everything drowned. It went from super saturated to adobe brick in about 5 minutes when I backed off the watering to compensate.

So this year, I was just planning to use my own sifted compost. Seems like the volunteers growing out of the pile do twice as well as what I'm trying to grow in trays. So wondering: Should I amend or blend it with anything first? There are a ton of egg shell fragments in there, so it already looks like potting mix. Should I add perilite or anything? I use both self watering trays and ones I have to hand water.

Interesting weather note: thanks to el ninio, evil corporations, or the freemasons, we are having an unusually warm December. So warm, in fact, I went ahead with another direct seed planting of winter greens in the hoophouse, and they are germinated and doing great. In fact, everything in there is loving it. The broccoli raab and lettuce more than doubled in size in a week. If it keeps this up, I may quit summer gardening all together!
