Almost winter solstice 2015

Had our first cold snap, down to 24 last night and a trace of snow on the ground. Got up to a high 45 with bright blue skies but stiff 25 mph NW winds, so went out in the garden to relax a bit this afternoon, weeding, pruning, putting some cuttings into the ground, checking out the buds on the flowering shrubs.... The spring that has flowed from my garden all Fall has now dried up and only soggy soil there

Expecting rain and mild temps this week, so will keep up with the winter garden pruning/tree burning and planning several new garden beds. Have too much pruning to get done in one winter!

Viewing the garden summer photos to dream out the next 90 days until we have plant growth again.

With the wet Fall and winter, should have good growth again this Spring.

Let's get Dec 21 over with and move on to Spring!

DH said the daylight comes later, but the evenings stay light later which gives the shortest day of the year but not the earliest sunset on the solstice. It may be awhile before I gather enough attention to listen to him explain it.

Hurrah! The climb back up always seems slower than the way we plummet into darkness but it gives us hope lol! Great view you have from above!

Enough darkness! Glad that daylight will be getting a bit longer each day.

I agree with you penen.all, that the climb back up seems a lot slower. But there is hope---maybe this year it will seem to come back a lot sooner?

Stop that wishful thinking - we have enough climate change as it is (HA!) to not expect to bring Spring any sooner than it will be!

I have too winter yard work still to be done, although I did drag all 70+ tropicals out of the gardening garage to get them wet over the next 5 mild rainy days!

It has to do with the curvature of the earth-its not a perfect sphere . Earliest sunsets were a week or so ago, latest sunrises will be a week or so away. Bottom line, more daylight starts tomorrow.

Bruce - Went to Newport News several times as a child to see relatives. R u zone 7? Don't know much about elevation. IN is flat. So more snow? Colder temps?

At this elevation I have similar weather to Detroit MI micro-climate and the Wilmington DE climate I moved here from. Climate Zone information is for flatlanders; elevation changes temps. East of the mountains is Zone 7

Finishing this warm wet spell this weekend, +3 inches rain total fell overall this week. Worked in the yard yesterday pruning shrubs and trees -only noticed plant changes were the new surface root growth on the large hosta clumps, which signals movement for Spring.

Most old hosta clumps will push out a few big surly root tips on the surface, which keep the clump from sinking overwinter. They lay down and embed in the soil in the Spring.

Sounds like your hostas are ahead of mine. I did notice this morning a Tassel fern has a bit of new growth on the crown. Love the idea of property in the mountains - sounds so peaceful...we have a wooded lot that's fun. But today is no fun - we could get 5 inches of rain...
